Measuring a room for any new carpets or vinyl flooring is stressful enough, so we thought we would show you a guide which will make this as simple as possible for you.

First you need to get the basic measurements - this is the length and width of the room, but always remember to measure from the longest points, as this ensures you don’t get any gaps against the walls.

It is always better to buy slightly more than you need so we recommend you add an extra 5cm to the length and the width to ensure you have enough, and also factor in measuring through the doorways to meet other flooring. Now you’re ready to get the area of the carpet, to do this you need to multiply the length x the width. This will give you the area you need.

Some carpets come in 4m and 5m, so if your room is bigger than this the carpet may require a join. So make sure you keep either patterns or the run of the carpet the same, otherwise lighting may affect the look, and it could potentially look like a different carpet.

Stairs

Stairs might seem like a hassle to measure, but they’re really simple once you know how to do it.

Firstly, measure the width of the stairs, and round up to either 4m or 5m. Next you need to measure the height of the step, and the depth. Once you have these measurements, you can work out the total amount by adding both your height and depth together. Then multiply this by the amount of steps you want to cover.
